Equity Funding

by Angeli Cazares

Equity is such a hard concept. Most people don’t understand that equity isn’t giving everybody the same thing but giving everybody the amount of support and resources they need. A lot of times equity at school is little to not even exist. A lot of times there’s a lot of bias in school and academic spaces. Everybody should be treated with the same respect as their peers, and at times this isn’t fulfilled. When funding equity also becomes an issue a lot of times schools give the funding to fundamental practices to one student but fail to give that same amount to a different student. And at times this builds broken relationships at schools from higher authority to student, teacher to student, an admin to a student, as well to student and student. If we showed more equity with how we handle funding, a lot of the divisions that are present in the school and academic environment could be reduced by a large amount. Equity in funding is as important as a lot of other things with equity. A lot of times in school environments or academic spaces we see a lot of racism or a lot of ableism where people do not understand that just because somebody is different doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the same respect and treatment as others as needed per individual. Funding can also help with this.  Presenting resources to students as well as admin and staff on how equity is to be presented in school and academic spaces like clubs, extracurricular classes, as well as professional development for teachers. A lot of times people in authority such as teachers, admin, and school staff see themselves as perfect. As if they don’t make the same mistakes that a student or somebody with low authority as them can make. A lot of these times create a division where needs aren’t met and resources are taken away. Equity in treatment is such a fundamental thing for a child’s mind knowing that things aren’t always going to be the same but treatment should be always handed the same towards everybody is an extremely important thing for a child as well as adults to understand. A lot of times we failed to show this. As I stated before, clubs, extracurricular classes, as well as professional development, can all be ways that we can ensure equity in schools but for all of these things to happen, we need funding and funding in the correct places.
