Why is school funding important

by Angeli Cazares

If money wasn’t an obstacle to school funding, I would like to see a school that isn’t divided and has cared for the students as well as the staff. Mental health is such an important thing that gets overlooked. A lot of times we don’t see the importance of mental health in an academic space, we need to learn how to care for mental health and balance academics because it is such an essential thing for students and staff. When academics get to a point where they’re too difficult to complete, we fail to see that the student is not being lazy but is struggling. So I feel that with better school funding towards counselors, mental health advocates, mental health clubs, and resources that students, as well as staff, can use when they feel like they’re struggling. Even when they just feel like they need a little bit of extra support is such a fundamental thing for learning and work. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 20% of high school students have reported serious thoughts of suicide and 9 percent of students have acted upon these thoughts. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in people ages 15-24. This is why we have a chance to help kids instead of adding more stress.
