National Coalition of Public Education Advocates Responds to Senate Education Hearing, Urges Governors to Block Trump School Voucher Tax Scheme
“More than 130 education organizations warn that a GOP-backed tax credit would divert public dollars to private schools and undermine public education nationwide.”
Washington— On Wednesday, January 28th, immediately following a U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee hearing on educational choice, a national coalition of public education advocates—including parents, students, and public school educators—will respond by launching an unprecedented national campaign during a virtual press conference urging governors to reject a newly established federal school voucher tax credit included in Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
As part of the campaign, advocates will release joint letters signed by thousands of concerned citizens and allied organizations calling on governors to block the siphoning off of hard-earned public education tax dollars. The effort follows overwhelming voter rejection of school voucher expansion programs in states including Florida, Colorado, and Wisconsin.
Advocates and constituents from those states will participate in Tuesday’s press conference alongside representatives from the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, Partnership for Equity and Education Rights, Local Progress, and the Southern Education Foundation.
“The federal voucher scheme promises hope but only leads to destruction. Well-meaning leaders may be tempted to settle for the crumbs this administration is offering because our public schools have been starved for far too long, but this is not the solution. We demand better from our leadership,” states the joint letter. “Rejecting the voucher scheme is not rejecting funding; it is rejecting the dismantling of public schools.”
The voucher tax credit, tucked into the GOP-backed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” would use federal tax incentives to expand private school vouchers, a move advocates say drains public education funding while benefiting private and religious schools with little oversight. The coalition is calling on governors to reject the program outright, arguing that participation would accelerate inequality, weaken public accountability, and undermine the promise of a strong public education for every child.
