Let us DECIDE! Let the conversation begin.

Yesterday at the Capitol — despite the snow day — the Great Futures Colorado coalition held a press conference to unveil DECIDE (“Decide: Education Cuts or Invest in our Democracy and Economy”) — a proposed referred ballot measure that would give legislators the ability to balance the budget without slashing education funding and to start reinvesting in our schools.

Representative Debbie Benefield, who will soon introduce the resolution to put the measure on the November ballot, joined Great Futures member organizations at the press conference.

Coverage was extensive.  Read (and watch) all about it.

From the Denver Daily News:

The Great Futures Colorado campaign aims at finding a guaranteed funding source for education, noting that education is slated to be cut by at least 6 percent for the coming fiscal year, which equates to between $400-500 per pupil. At a news conference yesterday, over and over again proponents asked lawmakers to “let (voters) decide.” They say “inaction is not an option anymore.” . . .

Proponents of the so-called DECIDE (Decide: Education Cuts or Invest in our Democracy and Economy) proposal point out that Colorado ranks 48th in the nation for higher education operating expenses per capita. They say when it comes to K-12 per-pupil funding, Colorado falls $1,397 below the national average per student.

“We the students refuse to sit idly by,” said a passionate Andrew Bateman, chairman of the Associated Students of Colorado. “We are asking our legislators, ‘Let us decide.'”
