On August 13, 2009, the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Program kicked off at the State Capitol and in Hooper, CO at Sangre de Cristo Elementary School after the financing was secured to start constructing four brand new state of the art buildings in the San Luis Valley, replacing schools built in the 1920s. BEST marks the most significant investment in Colorado school construction since statehood. In this clip, State Treasurer Cary Kennedy, who helped design and pass the BEST program, discusses Great Education Colorado’s role in its creation.

The Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Act will replace and repair crumbing schools throughout Colorado, providing tens of thousands of children in Colorado with schools that are safe, healthy and educationally enriching. BEST marks the most significant investment in Colorado school construction since statehood. Great Education Colorado is proud to have been part of the genesis of this important legislation, having organized (along with Children’s Voices) the school tours that inspired the Speaker to work with Treasurer Kennedy and others to develop this plan.
