You probably know that Colorado’s education funding system is flat out broken. Every district in Colorado is facing heartbreaking decisions regarding class size, teaching slots, art & music, fees, furlough days and even school closures. It’s a statewide problem that ultimately requires a statewide solution.
That’s why Great Ed is part of the 2013: Year of the Student Project, which is bringing together people and organizations that care about Colorado’s students to demand that our state leaders finally address our education funding crisis next year. If you haven’t yet, we hope you’ll sign the Year of the Student call to action to become a part of this diverse and growing coalition.
But even though Colorado’s school funding problem is a statewide one, there’s still something you can do locally right now to ensure a brighter future for every Jeffco student: support the local 3A & 3B campaign, for Jeffco’s mill and bond.
Over the past 4 years, Jeffco has had to cut its budget by $78 million. Without 3A, the district will face another $45 million in cuts for the 2013-14 school year and the impact is almost unthinkable: larger classes, fewer teachers, fewer electives and choices, no instrumental music in elementary schools, no teacher librarians in middle schools, and no more funding for Outdoor Lab. The passage of 3A is critical to every Jeffco student and the community as a whole.
You can learn more about 3A & 3B by going to the “Support Jeffco Schools” campaign website and by watching this video.
Together, we’re going to make 2013 the Year of the Colorado Student. Right now, you can make sure the Year of the Student starts a little bit early for Jeffco kids by voting YES on 3A & 3B .
Thanks for all you do for the schools and students of Jeffco and Colorado.
