Four Day School Week? There’s a Map (and Petition) for That!
Norwood School District

The school board is considering moving to a four-day school week next year, a change that could make up for about $50,000, or 25 percent, of the current necessary cuts. The four-day week would allow the district to reduce some personnel hours and transportation use, as well as save in food service and energy usage.

Increasing Class Sizes? There’s a Map (and petition) for That too!
Littleton

“There are already over 25-30 students in each classroom as a result of last years surrounding school closings. We took on those extra students. Now there are more proposed cuts which will reduce teacher headcount,para-professional headcount and specials headcount(PE, music and art)…our children are falling behind terribly.”
(Source: M.L., Littleton, Great Futures Map / Petition)

Fewer Critical Support Services? There’s Even a Map for That!
Salida

“After waves of cuts over the past year, the school district is now considering charging for bus service in this large and mostly rural county. We’ve also been told that the music program will be cut at my daughter’s elementary school.”
(Source: E.A.W., Salida, Great Futures Map/Petition)

Mancos

“As school nurse I deal primarily with the low income and the underinsured and uninsured…These kids usually turn to and rely on the school setting to meet their many needs: food, clothing, a community that cares for them. Our budgets are already stretched so thin that we scramble to assist these kids in crisis…any more cuts to our school system will be depriving these kids of basic services such as hot food for their hungry tummies and a chance for the extra help they need to succeed in school, in life and an opportunity to be productive adults….Children are our future- our hope for a better world – cut our funding and you most definitely will drastically reduce our hope for a better tomorrow.”

Sample Comments:

If we do not prepare our children to compete in the global economy they will not be able to lead our country. They are the next generation of tomorrow leaders.

Uneducated citizens are unfulfilled in themselves, and a burden to society. We must invest significantly more in education. We must make sure the money goes to students and educators, not consultants.

Colorado needs to better fund schools and programs for all children, especially children with special needs!

PK-12 grade students in Fort Lupton do not have the same advantages as students in Cherry Creek, Longmont, Eagle County, etc. Our resources do not come close to matching those districts. Our students deserve a high quality education, great teachers and modern facilities too! In addition, higher education has become unaffordable for average citizens, especially if a student attends CU or CSU. I have a student attending CU-Boulder in the school of engineering. He is a second semester junior and we currently have educational debts totaling $28K for his 3 years there. POarents and students have increasingly been forced to pick up rising costs in tuition, housing and books due to years of neglect from the legislature and taxpayer. We will have two sons in college next year. Help! Anti-tax sentiment has permeated public policy – Colorado can and must radically change this scenario. Please consider increasing the mineral severance taxes (see Wyoming)to a competitive level and use the resources for PK-20 education and making a better Colorado!

My daughter has 31 children in her 3rd grade class. That is just too many it puts and unrealistic burden on the teacher and the parents. I don’t want to put my children in private school, but I am considering it. Thanks.

Elsewhere, we’ve provided a visual representation of the fact that Colorado can’t sink much lower in higher education funding as compared with the rest of the United States. Here is a companion graph (click on the image to enlarge), showing that our competitiveness with our neighboring states on K-12 investment is just about equally grim. (Note that Mississippi has passed us by . . .) Education Week’s annual Quality Counts state school finance data study is out, and the news isn’t good for Colorado. Although Colorado earned an “A+” for funding “equity” (click on Colorado on the map found here), we earned a solid ‘F’ for “funding”.

The Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Act will replace and repair crumbing schools throughout Colorado, providing tens of thousands of children in Colorado with schools that are safe, healthy and educationally enriching. BEST marks the most significant investment in Colorado school construction since statehood. Great Education Colorado is proud to have been part of the genesis of this important legislation, having organized (along with Children’s Voices) the school tours that inspired the Speaker to work with Treasurer Kennedy and others to develop this plan.
